How to make a yule log - cake recipe
By Kyle246
One day, I was reading the news online, and I came across a picture of a delicious looking food that I have never seen before. I was like, "Woah! What is that?" I read further, and found out that this mysterious food is called a "yule log." Then I was like, "ohhh it does look like a log." But I still don't know what the word "yule" means. I did some quick research and came across that "yule" means "Christmas." Then I decided that this would be perfect to make over Christmas break.
That is what I did. On Monday afternoon I decided to take on this task. This was my first time making a yule log and it looked difficult, so I was not sure if it would turn out. At the end it actually did turn out and I was so happy! I took a bunch of pictures too to share it with you guys.
Making a yule log is actually not as hard as it looks. It is very fun at the same time. I will share with you the recipe that it takes to make a nice simple yule log.
Ingredients
Cake
- 18.25 oz box of Betty Crocker or Pillsbury chocolate cake mix
- 3 eggs
- 1/3 cup water
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- about 1 tablespoon powder sugar
Chocolate Frosting
- 1/2 cup whipping creme
- 1 tablespoon corn syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Filling
- 12 oz whipped vanilla frosting (I thought that whipping creme for the filling would taste better so I used that instead)
- a sprinkle of ground coffee (optional)
Pictures as I made the yule log
Directions
- Heat your oven to 350 degrees if you have a dark or nonstick pan (heat to 375 for a shiny pan) Use a 15X10X1 inch pan (if you don't have one that exact size, just find a pan that will hold all the cake batter in a thin rectangle)
- Take some tin foil and line the pan with it. Use cooking spray to spray on the tin foil (or use some butter if you don't have cooking spray).
- Using a large bowl, beat the 3 eggs until it turns a nice yellow. Then add the cake mix, water, and oil. Beat some more for about 1.5 minutes. Pour into pan (try and spread out the cake batter evenly)
- Bake for 11-14 minutes, or until the cake springs up when touched in the middle.
- Take some paper towels and neatly place them on your counter (you will be wrapping the cake in this).
- Use the powered sugar to sprinkle on the paper towels. This will help the cake not stick to it, so use a lot.
- Turn the pan upside down on the paper towels and remove the tin foil.
- While the cake is still hot, roll it up with the paper towels and let it cool for about 1 hour.
- When the cake is cooling, take out a microwave safe bowl. Microwave the whipping creme (the 1/2 cup) for about 1 minute of until it boils. stir in the vanilla, corn syrup, and chocolate chips. Beat using a wire whisk or a spoon until smooth. Refrigerate for 1 hour and stir every 15 minutes.
- Unroll the cake and remove the paper towel. Spread the filling in the cake (whichever one you decided to use). I decided to sprinkle some ground up coffee over the filling because I like the taste. Then roll the cake back up.
- Now take the chocolate frosting, and spread it on the outside of the cake. If it is too hard, heat it up in the microwave for a little bit and stir it.
- Using a fork, you can make lines in the chocolate frosting to resemble a log. You can also decorate it in anyway you want. Use your imagination.
- Store in the refrigerator.
- Have fun eating it!

Making a yule log was very fun and a good experience. If you decide to make it, have fun and use your imagination. I did not decorate mine very much, but with yours, you can make it look any way you want!
